This fall, the Laser and Radial NQR’s took place at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on English Bay off Jericho Beach in Vancouver. Although mid-October, the weather was mostly pleasant and warm as Vancouver enjoys year-round sailing weather. The last day, however, showed us what sailing in Vancouver winters means: 4C, heavy rain, and a chilling fog. Luckily, our shoes and clothes weren’t too wet as we boarded the 11pm flight back home!
It was a light wind, short chop event with a small 2-4 knot breeze in the morning that would pick up to 6-7 in the afternoon and eventually die back down again by the last race of the day. Luckily, some 10 knot gusts came blowing through early on the third day which allowed for one good race where competitors were hiking.
The competition was especially fierce amongst the youths as this event qualified two athletes to attend the ISAF Youth World Championship in Kingston next summer.
Top Radial Female Youth – Isabella Bertold (BC)
Top Laser Male Youth – Robert Davis (ON)
The total points from both the National Qualifying Regatta and the Olympic Class regatta are used to identify the next members of the Canadian Sailing Team. As well, these regattas are ranked #1 in priority for the Quebec team selection so any athletes looking to get carded on the Quebec team for 2007 should definitely consider the OCR’s in Miami if they missed their NQR’s.
Congratulations to Quebec team members Jessica Lombard, Anthony Boueilh, and Maxime Gagnon, for participating in the event.
