A practically unknown sport, Ice yachting is a sailboat on skates: the tapered shell is attached to a transverse board equipped with a skate at each end. In addition, another skate is attached to the front of the shell and allows directing the boat. The ice yachts are propelled by the wind and can reach speeds five times the speed of the wind; it is not uncommon to reach 100km/hr. The goal of the race is to go three times around the course that is determined by two marks embedded in the ice.
The world up of the International Detroit News Ice Yacht Racing Association (IDNIYRA) takes place every two years in Europe and one in North America. This year, Kingston is the capital of sailing in Canada being chosen to host this major event. In addition, Kingston will also receive the next Canadian Championships from the 14the to the 15th of February. A guaranteed show for the sailing enthusiasts who can watch the races from the Kingston Yacht Club
